041 - WWI 6 PLACE IMPERIAL BAVARIAN RIBBON BAR IN BOX OF ISSUE

Price: $150.00

This is a beautiful First World War Imperial Bavarian 6 place medal bar that is contained in a nice brown box of issue. The ribbon bar consists of the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class, a Bavarian War Merit Cross 1st Class with swords, a Bavarian War Service Cross 2nd Class, a 1914-18 Hindenburg combatant’s Cross of Honor with swords, an Hanseatic War Merit Cross and an Austrian War Merit Medal with swords. All the ribbons are beautifully double folded with a twist in the Bavarian style and are bright, crisp and without damage or staining. It has a hand sewn black canvas backing and is complete with its original long pin assembly. The ribbon bar comes in a simulated brown marble cardboard box of typical German manufacturer and has a gold leaf border running around the top of the box. The bar rests on a bed of very old, yellowed cotton. There is old brown tissue paper in the underside of the top lid. This is undoubtedly the manufacture’s original box that the bar came in and very seldom seen still united with the original ribbon bar. Overall condition of both pieces is excellent.(#1822)

044 - MODEL 1897 BAVARIAN GENERAL GRADE OFFICER’S SPIKED HELMET – SPECTACULAR UNTOUCHED EXAMPLE!

Price: $3,750.00

This is a magnificent Imperial German Model 1897 Bavarian General Grade Officer’s Spiked Helmet that is complete, original and in excellent condition. The black leather body retains its original shape and is without cracks, gauges or any damage. All stitching is original tight and excellent. The brass visor fittings are undamaged as well and tightly affixed to the leather visors. The underside of the front visor is textured black leather while the underside of the rear visor is textured and red finished. Both visors are squared off at the sides as is correct on the Model 1897 helmets. The exterior of the front visor appears to have a textured appearance that looks to be of original manufacture to the helmet. It does not look like the melted tar finish that is often seen on World War I spike helmets that have been improperly stored and subjected to heat. Rather, it appears to be a deliberate texturing. The fluted spike is perfect and is tightly fitted to the spike base plate. The base plate extends out from the top center with four arms in a cross configuration and is secured to the helmet by four beautiful starburst studs. Both large officer cocards are present and original to the helmet. On the right side is the National red, white and black cocard and on the left is the Bavarian blue and white. The brass scale chinstrap is perfect and without damage. The front plate is a magnificent piece exhibiting exquisite detail to the lions, Bavarian pierced crown and central medallion. The plate is affixed to the front of the helmet by the original square nuts and washers and there are no other holes except those for the plate now in place. The interior lining features a light tan leather sweatband with scalloped edge and a split cream colored silk dome liner. The leather sweatband is completely without damage while the cream colored silk dome liner is worn in several small areas that appear as thread bare spots in the fabric. There is a name penciled on the interior of the front part of the helmet but I can not make it out. This is just a spectacular pre – WWI spiked helmet that is correct in every respect and a thing of beauty to behold. It is completely untouched and in original condition and just a screamer!

The front of the badge exhibits exquisite detail to the laurel leaves in the wreath, to the pebbled background and to the swords and helmet. The back plate is beautifully radiated and silver soldered to the front piece. The seam is virtually undetectable to the eye. There are two small weep holes, one just above the pin hinge and one below the bottom catch. The pin assembly is complete, excellent and fully functional.
